I should start off by saying that I'm a complete noob when it comes to FM synths. I've got a DX7 that was given to me by a friend, and it has no sound output from either the headphone or line out. The display works perfectly.

I'm guessing that its a software problem, since I doubt that both outputs would fail. I checked the battery, and it reads 4.6v. I'm thinking it must be a volume or modulation setting turned all the way down. I don't have any ROMs or cartridges, so I can't do a factory reset that way.
Any Suggestions? With all the menus and algorithms I get completely lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Box wrote:Initialize a patch and it'll give you a basic sine wave.
If you don't hear anything at that point it's something aside from lost memory. Press the brown function button, then the green number 10. Will ask if you're sure, and say yes. Should have basic sine wave now. This works!!!!
Many of these sounds came from one synthesizer: the Yamaha DX7. It was released in 1983, and was the first digital synthesizer to have an impact on popular music. Along with its eventual spiritual successors, the Roland D-50 and Korg M1, the DX7 marked a move away from warm analog sounds, to complex digital sounds. DX7 (1983): The most famous, and widely produced of the DX synths. 6 operators, one timbre and no effects. DX9 (1983): Budget, reduced-feature version of the DX7, featuring only 4 operators, meaning less complex sounds. It also lacked velocity sensitivity, and could only hold 20 patches at a time, as opposed to the DX7’s 32 patches.

Thanks so much! I can't figure out how to make it sound like anything besides a single sine wave, but the basic functions are working. All keys and outputs functioning like they should. Now that I know it works how, would I get any other patches that sound like anything on it?

You guys rock! Welcome, glad it worked. FM synthesis takes awhile to get used to, but after awhile you'll have a general idea. Tells me the memory was wiped out. There are lots of patches online for sale or free, have to transfer them in through MIDI.
Easiest thing to do though would be to buy one of the DX7 ROM cartridges and load the cartridge sounds into the DX7. Of course can make your own with books like '600 Voices for DX7'. But that requires putting in all the patch data by hand. Would be a good learning tool, plan on getting soon myself. But, easiest thing would be to buy a ROM cartridge and tweak those sounds at first to get the hang of things.
